Ramsey Post Office as it was in 1900 on premises in the Great Whyte, occupied by Messrs. Darling’s newsagency buisness in 1954, now (2011) occupied by News Plus.
In the doorway is the sorting clerk, Mr. Arthur Kilby, and the lad with the cycle is the late Mr. Thomas Garton, who retired in 1949 after 49 years’ postal service. He became the towns first cyclist messenger, having previously delivered telegrams on foot. The postmaster in 1900 was Mr. George Middleton, who later became M>P> for Carlisle.
